The End of Summer…

It has been quite some time since I posted and that is because I have been on a roller coaster summer since I released Eryn’s Tale Episode 1.  In May, Eryn’s Tale released, it wasn’t as booming of a release as I had hoped for but it performed decently.  After which time I completed the second / third drafts of Battle Engines and then the whirlwind began.

As I have mentioned in the past, I am a competitive long sword fighter, it is my goal to write stories that have realistic fighting.  In July, was one of the biggest sword events in of the year.  Longpoint.  Longpoint is an event that includes a tournament, classes, and training sessions.  It is quite possibly the biggest event in the HEMA community.  (Historical European Martial Arts).  We don’t dress up and go “thee and thou” but we study ancient manuals from 1100’s onward to recreate the art of fighting from those days.  It is a blast!  Here are some videos of me getting pummeled!

I’m in the blue and yellow socks… first is a sword and buckler video and the two others are long sword. (warning, videos can start loud, it is a very big loud room!)

I would love to hear from all of you who have read my stories if I am properly capturing the battles.  I want to capture a mix of drama along with realism to make stressful fights. After the tournament I was super bruised and beaten!  Afterwards, I took a few days to relax before a few work and family trips literally devoured the remainder of my summer.  Sadly, not much writing was accomplished…

So, with that being said, in my goal to also be completely transparent with my audience here is my two month plan:

Eryn’s Tale 2, which was supposed to be written in July will start on Monday.  For Nanowrimo, in November, I will be writing a stand alone book that I am deeming Aelaar Horror as I haven’t quite figured out the title yet.

Thanks everyone for listening to my random ramblings.  Let me know what you’ve thought of my books if you’ve read them.

Eryn’s Tale Launch tomorrow!

It has been a long road to get here.  2016 decided that it would be a good idea to make every inch of progress feel like a struggle.  The year consisted of the death of an elderly family member, my sister having a pre-mature baby (she’s fine now), Rascal (our dog) having to be put down, my mother-in-law passing, two bouts of month long pneumonia and I’m pretty sure a bunch else I’m missing.  I still managed to write and edit Eryn’s Tale.  I may never find the success I hope for in this endeavor.  But I will move through life knowing I’ve done my best to get there.

Persistence is key in all things.  For all those down and out about their lives, be sure to keep pushing forward towards your dreams.

Enough sappiness.  Eryn’s Tale launches tomorrow and I couldn’t be happier!  I have had my first delving into marketing through Facebook and Amazon.  I’ve already made mistakes but managed to turn them around to my benefit.

Book Marketing Lessons Learned:
1. Don’t use Facebook to push people to your sales page.  It’ll cost you more money then you will earn.
2. DO give away a free item in exchange for email addresses using Facebook ads to make valuable associations to people that may turn into fans.  (hope so anyway!)
3. Amazon ads aren’t valuable until you have a few reviews under your belt but are much cheaper then Facebook.  Over 30,000 ad shows, 0 sales.  Not a good use of the money.
4. Until you can reconcile spending the money on a service to do it for you taking names from ads and into your mailing list in a manual process.  No one tells you this.  But accept it that grooming your mailing list (something you hear a lot) is taking names from one place and importing them into another.  In doing this I have grown my mailing list from 4 (2 of which were me) to over 100.  Not impressive yet, but a start is better than gridlock.

It has been an awesome journey and I feel as if I have passed one of the many hurdles I will have to jump in order to make a career of this thing.  If anyone is interested in Eryn’s Tale, you can find it here:

At last! Eryn’s Tale!

Nothing is better than finishing anything.  And at long last I have finally finished Eryn’s Tale Episode 1.  This will be the first part of a three part novella.  Writing, Editing, more editing, MORE editing, and then polishing is all done.  I had an amazing book cover designed by Dragan Paunovic and now I’m just waiting for May 12th.

I will be taking the week of launch off for some R&R and then back to the grind editing Battle Engines.

That is what my next two months of writing looks like.  I’ll log in how my progress is going as I move along.  Today I start my first marketing campaigns as well and I will post up about how those are progressing.  Starting my first marketing campaigns is intimidating as hell, but with some help of the internet egg heads I’m hoping to not mess it up.

Sword Fighting Tournament

Winter finally came in Philadelphia, my home.  We had been waiting for it to arrive for some time, the 50s and 60s that we’ve been enjoying since just about Christmas were bound to end eventually.  The temperature for the past few weeks has been frigid at best, painful at worst.  During this wicked cold spell I got to continue my second joy in life beyond writing and that is sword fighting.

The tournament itself was called Flowerpoint and was hosted by a Hema school that the school I attend is closely associated with called L’Arte Della Bellica.  It was a fantastic event where you get to meet new people and try to stab at them with un-sharpened steel long swords.  Which, if you’ve read my books, is a passion of mine.  I gather a ton of inspiration from this fighting for my stories and try to instill this in my books which involve medieval style combat.

Overall, my goals for the tournament were to meet some new people (mission accomplished), not get into any grappling matches (mission accomplished), and to keep my point on line with my opponent so I could stabbed them (eh…).  I could have done better with my third goal.  I ranked 30 out of 60, also a bit lower than I would have hoped but as this is only my second tournament and my first in a year and a half I am pleased.

Below you will find videos of all of my fights, so you can all see what I am trying to emulate in words what I am capable of doing in real life.  I hope it shows.

So you have some context, the way this all works is there is a ring judge called the director.  He is the authority in the ring.  There are 4 judges on the outside that will make the call ofa  hit and who hit.  The matches last 3 exchanges with hitting anywhere on the body as long as there is good edge alignment.  Overall, I won a few, lost a bunch but it was a boat loads of fun and I left happy.

One final tidbit that has nothing to do with sword fighting.  I am currently on track and hoping that I will be releasing Eryn’s Tale: Episode 1 on May 12th.  Pre-orders will be available in April, so if you like my work, please show your support!

Thanks for reading,

Book Cover Competition

Short post but I wanted to get this out there.  Today, I started a competition on 99Designs.com for my newest book.  The competition will take 7 days where a bunch of artist will create some book covers for me to review.  Extremely excited to see what comes out of this, so hopefully next week I will have an update!

2017…

So, the last time I posted was around November 24th.

I intended on posting more and posting throughout Nanowrimo and celebrating my success of writing 54,000 words in the event.  I finished Nanowrimo, but I missed the posting part due to many factors.  Daughter contracted pneumonia, I contracted pneumonia, a friend of mine committed suicide, and my family continued to get sick for 2 months.  I had intended on finishing the novel that I started in December and January but that failed miserably due to sicknesses.

Finally, after 2 entire months of just blah I think we are finally in the clear.  I have created a new plan for getting this book completed and will hopefully see it finished in March 10th.  In other news, we are still hard at work on Eryn’s Tale Episode 1 which is in Editing hell, but I am really looking forward to getting Eryn’s Tale Episode 1 and 2 out this year.  (That’s the goal anyway)

Battle Engines, which is the book I’m currently working on will likely see completion early 2018 after months of editing and reviews.

So, to keep myself honest, my goal is to see Eryn’s Tale: Episode 1 going live in April.  Eryn’s Tale: Episode 2 going live in late 2017 (Oct – Dec).  And Battle Engines going live between Jan – Mar in 2018.

We’ll see how that all works out.  Now, Back to writing!

Nanowrimo Day 24! Who’s behind? Not this guy!

I started this morning approximately 2800 words behind. This morning, on a wonderful turkey day, I busted my butt and wrote down 2,808 words putting me at 40,015!  Happy Holidays indeed I am finally back on track to complete my Nanowrimo novel in the 30 days for the first time since the 8th.  Woot!  Now I can really sit back and enjoy that turkey with a smile on my face.

I’m learning now though that I’m only midway through this novel and I expect I will be writing another 40 – 50k words in December to wrap this up.  So much for a 50k novel I was expecting but that’s a good thing!
